In an effort to inform and educate those considering adoption of a German Shepherd Dog, SOS will provide advice on both feeding raw and on feeding kibble. The majority of those in our group prefer to feed our dogs the prey model raw or BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet ...yes we feed raw meat and organ and raw bones (never cooked)!
Dogs - all dogs - are carnivores,
not herbivores or omnivores. Carnivores need MEAT, not a bunch of plants so
please do consider switching to a natural diet. It really is simpler and makes
more sense than you think.

A growing number of veterinarians state that processed pet food (kibbles and canned food) is the main cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog and cat. See Feeding Naturally to Prevent & Treat Disease.
Shortly after we posted our informational webpage on the subject of raw feeding we received the following correspondence from a GSD lover in Alaska. We'd like to share her email and our response with you.
Thanks

Greetings from Alaska,
I found your website online recently and just had to write to tell you how helpful your information is to my family. My
husband and I have two GSDs, both purebred, from a local breeder. After the heartbreaking news that our
beautiful 95 pound boy was diagnosed with hip dysplasia we began trying different regiments of care for him to ease his discomfort. Of course, we
had the surgery option, which very quickly became a non option for other reasons, so he is left with medication which often left him listless or
with no appetite. We were even told by a "reputable" source to feed him cat food!
Now, being a nurse by profession, I can understand the enticement value of feeding a treat for a dose of medication or something of that nature, but what then?; we cannot continue to feed our dog cat food. We began to contact some of the mushers in the area to see how they care for their animals that may have had injury or retired animals, well needless to say the majority of that REALITY was a real eye-opener for us and I have since become very selective about supporting that tradition.
When we were told that a change in diet to raw food might be helpful we decided to try. Again, all the questions of how to do this. After much time and energy researching we came across your website. We just wanted to write to thank you for putting out a simple formula that we could use. Finally all in one place, without having to wade through volumes of information we are able to feed each one of our dogs the proper amount of the healthy natural diet. It has really made a difference in our boy with dysplasia. I cut his pain meds to only giving when he is showing signs of discomfort and his arthritis meds routinely. Now his appetite is great and his coat is shiny. He runs and plays and has continued his schutzhund training and is generally a happy guy now. So thank you so much for that printing on your webpage.
I know that sometime we do something so simple and never realize the impact that our actions make on another person's life. We had to let you know how much you have enriched our lives with that one printing. Again, thank you, bless you, and keep up of all the good work you do.
Sincerely I hope that all your dogs continue to do well with the raw food.
Feeding as nature intended has so many great benefits. And thanks again for your thoughtfulness in taking the time to email us.
Save Our Shepherds rescue is in its infancy and your words of support mean so very
much to both of us. |
